The short answer
To get more Google reviews, ask every customer right after a good experience, make it one tap with your review link or QR code[2], and reply to every review personally. Don't offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and don't only ask happy customers. Google's policy bans both[3].
It's a timely question: searches for "google reviews" in India rose 140% over the past year[6].
9 ways to get more Google reviews
- Find your review link in your Google Business Profile and save it on your phone, WhatsApp quick replies and email signature[2].
- Print the review QR code at the billing counter, on the visiting card and on the delivery packet.
- Ask in person at the happy moment: when the customer thanks you, collects an order or sees the result.
- Send a short WhatsApp message the same day, with the link. The next day is fine; next month is too late.
- Ask everyone, not only the ones you think are happy. Selective asking breaks Google's rules[3].
- Train your team with one simple line, so everyone asks the same way.
- Add a review request to invoices and thank-you emails.
- Make it easy to mention specifics: "It helps if you mention what we did for you."
- Keep asking every week. Recent reviews count more with customers than a big old total[1].
“Thank you for choosing us today! If you have a minute, a short Google review really helps a small business like ours: [your review link]”
How to reply to reviews
Replies are part of your profile too. 80% of people are more likely to use a business that replies to all its reviews, but half are put off by generic, copy-paste replies[1]. Keep them short, personal and specific.
| Review type | What to say |
|---|---|
| 5 stars | Thank them by name, mention what they bought or did, and invite them back. |
| 3 to 4 stars | Thank them, address the one thing that wasn't perfect, and say what you'll improve. |
| 1 to 2 stars | Apologise without arguing, share a phone or WhatsApp number, and offer to fix it offline. |
| Review you think is fake | Reply politely that you can't find this customer, then report it through your Business Profile. |
What's not allowed
- No incentives: Google doesn't allow payment, discounts, free goods or services in exchange for a review[3].
- No review gating: you can't discourage negative reviews or ask only customers you expect to be happy[3].
- No fake or bought reviews. India's BIS standard IS 19000:2022 says reviews bought or written by people hired for that purpose shouldn't be published[4].
- In the US, the FTC's rule bans fake and AI-generated reviews and buying reviews, with civil penalties for knowing violations[5].
Breaking these rules can get reviews removed or your profile restricted, and it's never worth it. Genuine reviews, collected steadily, build a profile that keeps working for years.
