The short answer
To grow a YouTube channel, make videos for one clear type of viewer, give each video a title and thumbnail that promise something specific, deliver on that promise in the first 30 seconds, and upload on a schedule you can keep. YouTube says its recommendations are driven by what viewers watch, like, subscribe to, and tell it they were satisfied with[1]. Everything below is a way to earn those signals.
India is YouTube's biggest audience. YouTube's ad reach in India was about 491 million people in January 2025, more than any other country[2]. YouTube says it paid over ₹21,000 crore to Indian creators, artists and media companies in the three years before 2025, and that more than 15,000 Indian channels have over a million subscribers[3].
How YouTube decides what to recommend
There is no secret switch. YouTube explains that it looks at a viewer's watch history, likes, dislikes, subscriptions and feedback, including answers to satisfaction surveys, and also considers the reputation and quality of a channel[1]. In plain words: it shows your video to people similar to those who already enjoyed it.
12 YouTube growth secrets, in order of impact
Before you upload
- 1. Pick one viewer. "Beginners learning stock market in Hindi" grows faster than "finance, tech and vlogs". YouTube needs to know who to show you to.
- 2. Find topics people already search. Type your topic into YouTube search and note the suggestions; check the "Research" tab in YouTube Studio analytics for what your viewers look for.
- 3. Write the title before you shoot. If you can't write a clear, specific title, the video idea isn't ready.
- 4. Design the thumbnail for a phone screen: one face or object, three words at most, high contrast.
Inside the video
- 5. Deliver the promise in the first 30 seconds. Show the result first, then explain how. Cut long intros, channel logos and "hi guys, welcome back".
- 6. Change something every few seconds: a new angle, a zoom, a graphic, a B-roll clip. Static screens lose people.
- 7. Use chapters, captions and clear audio. Bad sound loses viewers faster than average video.
- 8. End by pointing to your next video, not with a long goodbye. Use end screens to keep viewers on your channel.
After you upload
- 9. Test titles and thumbnails. YouTube Studio lets you test up to three versions, and picks the winner by watch time share, not click-through rate[4].
- 10. Read audience retention for every video. Where the line drops sharply is exactly what to fix next time.
- 11. Reply to comments in the first hour and pin a question. Real conversation is a signal of a channel people value.
- 12. Make more of what works. Every month, list your three best videos by watch time and make a follow-up to each.
Should you post Shorts?
Yes, as a discovery tool. Shorts can now be up to three minutes long if the video is square or vertical[5]. Shorts bring new viewers fast, but those viewers often don't watch long videos. The strongest pattern is to use Shorts to tease or cut down your long videos, and link the full video from the Short.
- Hook in the first second, no intro
- Captions on screen, since many watch without sound
- One idea per Short
- Loop the ending back to the start so people rewatch
- Link the related long video
How to get your first 1,000 subscribers
- Upload at least one long video a week for six months. Most channels quit before month three.
- Make search videos first ("how to…", "best … under ₹…", "… vs …"). They keep getting views for years.
- Speak the language your viewers use, whether Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu or English. Regional content has much less competition.
- Ask for the subscribe only after you have given value, and say why: "subscribe for a new budget phone review every Sunday".
- Collaborate with channels of a similar size in your niche.
When to get help
Editing is where most creators lose time and where retention is won or lost. Retales edits long videos, Shorts and thumbnails for creators and brands across India, so you can spend your time on ideas and on camera.
