The short answer
To get customers from Instagram, switch to a business account, make your profile say clearly what you sell and where, post useful Reels and photos three times a week, reply to every message within an hour, and move serious buyers to WhatsApp or a call. Followers are nice; enquiries are the goal.
Your customers are almost certainly on Instagram already. India has about 480 million Instagram users, more than any other country[1].
1. Set up a profile that sells
Switch to a professional (business) account so you get insights, contact buttons and ad tools[3]. Then treat your profile like a shop window: someone should understand what you sell in three seconds.
- Profile photo: your logo or your face, clear at small size
- Name field: business name plus what you do, like "Meera Bakes | Custom cakes Jaipur"
- Bio: who it's for, what you offer, where you deliver, and one call to action
- Contact buttons: call, WhatsApp and directions
- Highlights: menu or price list, reviews, how to order, delivery areas
- A link to your website or WhatsApp catalog
2. What Instagram actually rewards
Instagram has explained how it ranks posts. For Reels, the most important predicted actions are whether people will reshare it, watch it all the way through, like it and visit the audio page[2]. For feed posts, it looks at likes, comments, shares, saves and how often people interact with you[2].
3. What to post: a weekly plan
Three posts a week, every week
- Monday, show the product or service: a short Reel of it in use, being made or the result.
- Wednesday, teach something: a quick tip, a common mistake, how to choose. This earns saves and shares.
- Friday, prove it: a customer review, a before-and-after, or a behind-the-scenes moment with your team.
Daily, in five minutes
- Post one or two Stories: today's stock, an offer, a poll.
- Reply to every comment and DM.
- Comment genuinely on a few local accounts and customers' posts.
4. Reels that people watch to the end
- Hook in the first second: show the result first, then how you got there.
- Keep most Reels between 7 and 30 seconds while you learn what works.
- Add captions on screen; many people watch without sound.
- Speak in the language your customers use, whether Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil or English.
- Shoot vertically on a phone with good light. Real beats polished.
- End with one clear action: "DM 'CAKE' to order" or "Tap WhatsApp to book".
5. Turn DMs into sales
Most Instagram sales for small businesses happen in messages. A buyer who waits three hours for a reply has often already ordered elsewhere.
- Saved replies for common questions: price, delivery, timing
- Reply within an hour during business hours
- Move serious buyers to WhatsApp Business, where you can share a catalog[5]
- Ask every new customer "Where did you find us?" and note it
- Thank buyers and ask them to tag you when they post
6. Measure what matters
Business accounts show insights for every post[3]. Look past likes. The numbers that predict sales are saves, shares, profile visits, link and contact button taps, and DMs that start from a post.
- Every month, list your five posts with the most enquiries and make more like them.
- Drop formats that get views but no enquiries.
- Once a post works organically, boost it or turn it into a Meta ad.
When to get help
If you can't post consistently, can't shoot good videos, or don't know which posts bring sales, a partner saves months. Retales plans content, shoots it, edits Reels and manages your Instagram for businesses across India, with enquiries tracked in your dashboard.
