The short answer
To rank in "near me" searches, claim and verify your free Google Business Profile, fill in every detail, choose the right category, add real photos, collect honest reviews and reply to them, and make sure your website and listings show the same name, address and phone number. Google decides local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and you can't pay to rank higher[1].
Local search is where most Indian small businesses can win quickly. Only about 13% of MSMEs use digital marketing today[5], so in many areas the competition on Google Maps is still thin.
How Google ranks local businesses
Google names three main factors {1}
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for. A complete profile helps Google understand you.
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or from the location in their search.
- Prominence: how well known you are, based on things like reviews, ratings and links from other websites.
1. Set up your Google Business Profile properly
Create or claim your profile at business.google.com. It's free[2]. Then verify it; Google treats verified businesses as the real owners and verification is one of its own ranking tips[1].
- Business name exactly as on your signboard, with no extra keywords stuffed in
- The most specific primary category (for example "Dental clinic" not "Doctor"), plus a few accurate secondary ones
- Full address if customers visit; a service area if you go to them
- Phone number that someone actually answers, and WhatsApp if you use it
- Regular hours plus special hours for festivals and holidays
- Attributes such as parking, wheelchair access or online appointments
- Products or services with short descriptions
- At least 10 real photos: outside, inside, team, work and products
2. Get more Google reviews the right way
Reviews feed prominence[1], and people read them before calling. The easiest way to get them is to ask at the right moment and make it one tap. Google recommends sharing your review link or QR code with customers[3].
A simple routine
- Print your review QR code at the billing counter and on the visiting card.
- Send the review link on WhatsApp right after a job is done or an order is delivered.
- Reply to every review within a few days, by name, in a line or two.
- For a bad review, apologise where it's fair, explain what you'll fix, and move the conversation to a call.
3. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere
Search engines match your business across the web. If your Google profile says "Shop 4, Sector 18" and Justdial says "Shop No. 4, Sec-18 Market" with a different phone number, it creates doubt. Pick one exact format and use it on your website, Google, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, Instagram and industry directories.
4. Make your website help your local ranking
Links from other websites are part of prominence[1], and your own website helps Google confirm who you are. It doesn't need to be big. It needs to be clear and fast on a phone.
- Name, address and phone as text on every page, matching your profile
- One page per main service, mentioning the areas you serve
- A Google map embed and directions on the contact page
- LocalBusiness structured data with your hours and address[4]
- A link from your Business Profile to the matching page on your site
- Click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons that work on mobile
5. Keep the profile active
- Add new photos every month. Google lists photos and videos among its ranking tips[1].
- Post offers, new products and events as profile updates.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section yourself before strangers do.
- Update holiday hours before Diwali, Holi and other festivals.
- Retail shops in eligible regions can add in-store products[1].
Common local SEO mistakes we see in India
- Two or three duplicate profiles for one shop, splitting reviews
- A personal mobile number that's switched off after 7 pm
- Keyword-stuffed names like "Best Salon Near Me Delhi Cheap", which break Google's guidelines
- No replies to reviews, especially the angry ones
- Photos from five years ago that don't match the shop today
A 30-day local SEO plan
- Week 1: claim, verify and complete your Google Business Profile.
- Week 2: fix name, address and phone on your website and top three directories.
- Week 3: start the review routine and reply to every past review.
- Week 4: add photos, a first update and FAQs, and check calls and direction requests in the profile's performance view.
