The short answer
Digital media marketing is the work of reaching and winning customers through digital channels: Google search, social media like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok, video platforms like YouTube, your website and email. It covers everything from a Google ad that shows when someone searches "plumber near me" to a helpful video that a customer shares with a friend.
It matters because that is where people's attention is. There are 5.66 billion social media user identities in the world, about 68.7% of the population, and people spend well over two and a half hours a day on social and video feeds[1]. In the US, businesses spent $294.6 billion on digital advertising in 2025, up 13.9% in a year[2].
Paid, owned and earned media: the three parts
Paid media: you pay for attention
- Search ads on Google and Bing, shown to people actively looking for what you sell.
- Social ads on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube, shown to people who match your customer profile.
- Influencer and creator partnerships.
- Strength: fast and measurable. Weakness: results stop when spending stops.
Owned media: channels you control
- Your website and landing pages.
- Your blog, guides and videos (search engine optimisation, or SEO, helps people find them).
- Your email list and SMS or WhatsApp contacts.
- Your social media pages.
- Strength: builds value over time and costs nothing per visit. Weakness: slow to grow.
Earned media: what others say about you
- Customer reviews on Google, Yelp, Trustpilot and industry sites.
- Shares, mentions, tags and word of mouth.
- Press coverage and links from other websites.
- Strength: the most trusted. Weakness: you can't buy it, only deserve it and ask for it.
The main digital marketing channels, in plain words
- Search engine optimisation (SEO): making your website show up in Google's free results. Slow to build, but lasts.
- Search ads (Google Ads): paying to appear at the top for specific searches. Fast, and good for people ready to buy.
- Social media marketing: posting useful content on your social pages to build trust and stay remembered.
- Social ads (Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok): paying to show ads to people based on interests, location and behaviour.
- Video marketing: YouTube videos, Reels and Shorts that explain, show and prove.
- Email marketing: staying in touch with past customers and leads. Usually the cheapest repeat sales you'll get.
- Content marketing: articles, guides and case studies that answer customers' questions.
- Influencer and creator marketing: borrowing trust from people your customers already follow.
Social is now the single biggest channel. In the US, social ad revenue reached $117.7 billion in 2025, ahead of search at $114.2 billion, and digital video grew 25.4% to $78 billion[2]. Worldwide, total advertising is forecast to reach about $1.3 trillion in 2026, with social the largest single channel[3].
Where should your business start?
- If people already search for what you sell ("accountant in Austin", "buy running shoes"), start with Google: a solid website, a Google Business Profile if you serve locally, and search ads.
- If people don't know they need you yet (a new product, an impulse buy, a lifestyle brand), start with social and video: short videos and social ads that create demand.
- If you sell to businesses, start with LinkedIn, helpful content and email.
- Whatever you do, collect reviews from day one. 97% of US consumers read reviews before choosing a local business[4].
How to tell if digital marketing is working
Likes and followers feel good but don't pay bills. Agree on numbers tied to money before you spend anything:
- Leads or enquiries per month, and where each came from
- Cost per lead and cost per sale
- Conversion rate: how many website visitors become leads or buyers
- Return on ad spend: revenue from ads divided by ad cost
- Customer lifetime value: what an average customer is worth over time
