The short answer
YouTube doesn't pay you by views or by date of joining. It pays your AdSense balance once it reaches the payment threshold of $100 (or local equivalent) and there are no payment holds[1]. If that is true at month end, the payment is started between the 21st and 26th of the next month[2].
A real timeline: November earnings to your bank
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 to 30 November | You earn. YouTube Analytics shows estimates. |
| Early December | November earnings are finalised and added to your AdSense balance[3] |
| 21 to 26 December | If the balance is $100+ with no holds, the wire is started[2] |
| Late December to early January | Money reaches your Indian bank; a wire can take up to 15 business days[3] |
If your balance is under $100, nothing is lost. It rolls into the next month until it crosses the threshold.
Steps for your first payment in India
- Submit US tax info in AdSense for YouTube (Payments, Payments info, Manage settings, US tax info). Individuals in India usually fill W-8BEN using their PAN[4].
- Verify your identity when Google asks. The name and address on your ID should match AdSense[3].
- At $10, a six-digit PIN is posted to your address. It usually takes about three weeks; enter it within four months[3].
- Add your bank: account holder name, bank name, account number, IFSC and SWIFT code, in English letters without hyphens[3].
- Set wire transfer as your primary payment method. It is the only AdSense method offered in India[3].
- Reach $100 by month end with no holds, and your payment goes out on the 21st to 26th of the next month[2].
US tax: the form that decides how much you keep
Google withholds US tax on earnings from US viewers, including ads, Premium, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and memberships[4]. With valid tax info, only your US-viewer earnings are withheld. In YouTube's own example, India's treaty brings the rate down to 15% of US-viewer earnings[4].
| Example: $1,000 earned, $100 from US viewers | Amount withheld |
|---|---|
| No tax info submitted | $240 (24% of all earnings)[4] |
| Tax info with India treaty benefit | $15 (15% of US earnings)[4] |
| Tax info without treaty benefit | $30 (30% of US earnings)[4] |
Tax forms expire at the end of the third full calendar year after you sign, so put a reminder in your calendar to renew[4]. Indian income tax and GST on AdSense income are separate questions; speak to a chartered accountant.
How many views do you need to get paid?
There is no fixed number. Views needed = threshold in rupees ÷ your RPM × 1,000. With $100 worth roughly ₹8,000 to ₹9,000 depending on the exchange rate, a channel with an RPM of ₹60 needs about 1.4 to 1.5 lakh monetized views to reach its first payout. A finance channel with a higher RPM needs far fewer.
Remember you first need to be in the YouTube Partner Program with ad revenue, which needs 1,000 subscribers. From 1 February 2027 new applicants need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views[5].
Bank charges, FIRC and purpose codes
- Google doesn't charge a fee for the wire. Your bank converts dollars to rupees at its own rate, which is usually a little below the market rate[3].
- Ask your bank for a FIRC (or e-FIRC) for each payment. It is proof of foreign income for your records and GST[3].
- Some banks ask for a purpose code for advertising income; tell them it is a payment from Google for advertising services[3].
- Wrong intermediary bank details can delay a wire, so leave those fields blank unless your bank tells you to fill them[3].
For creators in the US the threshold is the same $100 and payments go out in the same 21st to 26th window[2]. US creators get more payment options than wire transfer.
