The short answer
Choose Google Ads if people already search for what you sell, like "AC repair near me" or "CA for GST filing". Choose Meta ads on Instagram and Facebook if your product sells by being seen, like clothing, food, décor or courses, or if people don't know to search for it yet. Many businesses end up using both, but it's smarter to start with the one that fits, prove it works, then add the other.
Paid ads work for Indian small businesses when they're run well. In a survey of 3,249 MSMEs, more than half earned 2 to 3 times their ad spend back, and 78% said digital marketing lowered what it cost them to win a customer[1].
The core difference: intent vs discovery
Google Ads (search)
- Shows when someone types a search, so they're already looking.
- Best for urgent or high-value needs: repairs, clinics, legal, education, B2B services.
- Text ads, plus call and location extensions; also YouTube, Maps and shopping ads.
Meta ads (Instagram and Facebook)
- Shows while people scroll, based on their interests, age and location.
- Best for visual, impulse or new products: fashion, food, beauty, home, events, courses.
- Photo, video and Reels ads, with WhatsApp, call or message buttons.
How you pay on each
Both run on auctions and let you set your own budget. On Google, your maximum cost per click is the most you're willing to pay for a click, and you often pay less, only what's needed to hold your position[2].
Google budgets are set as an average per day. On busy days Google may spend up to twice your daily budget, but over a month you're never charged more than 30.4 times the daily amount[2][3]. Plan your month with that in mind.
On Google, quality beats the biggest bid
Google decides your ad's position using your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, the expected impact of extras like your phone number, and the context of the search. A relevant ad can win a higher position than a competitor bidding more[4].
- One ad group per service, with keywords that match it closely
- Ad text that repeats the searcher's words and your area
- A landing page about that exact service, not your home page
- Call and location extensions switched on
- Negative keywords like "free", "jobs" or "course" if they don't fit you
On Meta, the creative does most of the work
On Instagram and Facebook nobody is looking for you, so the first two seconds of the ad decide everything. Short, real videos usually beat polished brochures.
- Show the product in use or the result, not your logo.
- Speak the language your customers scroll in. About 98% of India's internet users consume content in Indic languages[1].
- Test three or four different hooks each month and keep the winners.
- Use a WhatsApp or message button if your customers prefer to chat before buying.
- Retarget people who watched your videos or visited your site.
Which should you start with?
Start with Google Ads if
- People already search for your service with clear words
- Each customer is worth a lot (clinics, real estate, B2B, education)
- You serve a fixed area and want calls
Start with Meta ads if
- Your product looks good on camera
- You sell online across India
- You're launching something people don't know to search for
- You want followers and repeat buyers, not just one-time leads
A simple first-month plan
- Week 1: pick one platform and one service, set conversion tracking (calls, forms, WhatsApp clicks).
- Week 2: launch two or three ad versions with a small daily budget.
- Week 3: pause what doesn't bring enquiries; move budget to what does.
- Week 4: work out cost per enquiry and cost per sale, then decide whether to scale or add the second platform.
Retales plans and runs Google and Meta ads for businesses across India, with shoots and creatives made in-house and every rupee tracked in your dashboard.
